Bonnie Tomm, native Canadian, is our music

teacher who brings a vast repertoire of experience in
teaching with the Orff Schulwerk approach. She exposes the
students to the basic elements and principles of music.
Concepts and skills include activities in beat and rhythm,
tempo, dynamics, melody direction and patterns. Emphasis is
given to learning English vocabulary when new songs are
introduced. Creative movement is an integral element in the
class, which is structured with different lessons to engage
the students for 30- 45 minutes twice a week. Students
explore with Orff instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels,
drums, rhythm sticks among others) and use them to accompany
songs; performing patterns, beat and rhythms.
The music
classes have become
a vital ingredient in our effective teaching of English,
offering developmentally appropriate songs for each grade
level. The music
teacher provides support in the weekly
assemblies with sing-alongs and accompaniment when
classrooms present special programs to the parents.
Every
Christmas each grade level in Preprimary presents a full 40
minute program which reflects hard work and team effort in
the production. The First grade class presents “The Great
Kapok Tree” musical at the end of the school year as their
farewell to preprimary.
