Overview
Mathematics is the fundamental study for the understanding and further exploration of all sciences and enhances the
individual to think logically, individually, and keenly.
At Colegio Bolivar, the Math program goes from 6th grade's basic arithmetic to 12th grade analytical
CALCULUS. The students
are exposed to problem solving, group work, and critical thinking since entering middle school.
Colegio Bolivar offers a full college preparatory program in the area of mathematics. Since we are a school operating
under both the American and the Colombian systems, we must adjust our course content accordingly and offer instruction of a type that will suitably prepare our
students for what follows. The demands of examinations such as the
SAT and
ICFES must betaken into account whilst we try to offer a broad and balanced
curriculum within the subject area.
There is an increasing focus on mathematical education in the United States at the moment and at the same time we are increasingly aware of the importance of what
we do at local level. We must ensure that all our students have the opportunity to become mathematically literate, are capable of extending their learning, and
become informed citizens capable of understanding issues in a society in an increasingly technological age. We must develop our students' ability to explore, analyze,
reason logically and problem-solving.
Changes in technology must bring about changes in mathematics and its uses. Because of such developments we must educate our students -in Mathematics context-in the use of computers and calculators as tools for processing information. This position will be according to the technological advances and technological policies of
the school. At the same time we must use them as a means to an end and not the end in themselves.
Starting next school year,
2002-2003, there will be another math course
available to the advanced senior students, taught by Mr. Posso. This course is
called AP Mathematics, an Advanced Placement
Program course of CALCULUS AB and CALCULUS BC. However, by a unanimous vote, the
students have chosen to focus on CALCULUS AB next year and take the respective
AP
Exam. Because it is so new, the
administrative department is still figuring out how it is that they will adapt
this course in the student's schedules; it will probably be seen
as an elective for a selected group of seniors who have either already seen
12th grade math or are interested in taking the course plus the respective core
math class. This program is directed for students who are advanced in
mathematics and are eager to learn more. The purpose of this project is to
enrich the students with a higher knowledge of CALCULUS, so that they can later
take the AP Exams: either CALCULUS AB or BC, depending upon what they have
chosen to study. Furthermore, they will also enjoy the benefit of earning college credits
and placement while still in high school.
