  • December 6 Final Discussion of Fiction & Short Stories - Please read A & P (page 619) and The Cask of Amontillado (page 611).  We will look at Poe's Theory of Poetry and Compositon.  Weekly Workshop: The Birth of Christ [Luke 1-2] due.  Bring back books from Semester One.

  • January 15:  Review AP exam essays.  Bring TWO copies of your formal essay WITHOUT comments to our next class!

  • January 23:  Read & Prepare Chapter One from Poetry (p. 645).  Introduce King Lear - Hand out Background Information.  King Lear through Act III due by February 12 and finished by February 27 - reading notes and AP essay due by March 2.  Second outside play from text due by March 7.  Give Paideia Seminar Agenda for Beloved seminar on Monday.
  • January 25:  Finish Chapter One from Poetry (p. 645).  Prepare Beloved for Seminar on Monday (Moderator, Probing Questions, Formal Rubric & Grading, Use of Text).  Finish Beloved and read the Seminar Agenda and criticisms previously handed out for the seminar on Monday.  Weekly Workshop: Book or Movie Review due.

(4) The Week of January 29 - 3 classes

  • January 29:  Paideia Seminar over Beloved.  Please have read the criticisms assigned (one & two), finished the book AND prepared for the seminar.  Third Quarter Short Essay due by February 20.

  • February 2:  Introduction to Shakespeare, Tragedy and Hamlet.  Please read the introduction (pages vii to xlii) in Hamlet, Perrine (pp 1027 to 1032 & 1074-1078), the handouts (Tragedy Handouts - Tragic Structure and Tragic Hero) and the online resources here and here Weekly Workshop: Odysseus and the Trojan Horse due.
     
During the following four weeks, while we are reading Hamlet in class, you should be working on the following:
 
  1. You need to be reading King Lear  by William Shakespeare and one other Shakespeare play of your own choosing.  Information about Shakespeare and his work can be found on the resources page - both handouts and web links - and I will be giving you some handouts in class.  King Lear, which should be read with your reading partner (and which counts as your 3rd quarter outside novel), should be read to the end of Act III by March 16 and finished by March 26.
  2. You will have a formal essay due on April 16 over one of the Shakespeare plays we will read during the third quarter.  You must use a Shakespeare play for this assignment.  AT LEAST two of your peers MUST have reviewed the essay before you finish the final draft, and their comments along with your UPDATED Common Errors must accompany your paper when you hand it in.

Optional writing assignments will be available for those who have mastered the formal essay.
