Parents Survey Results
Starting in
May and finishing in June 2008, Colegio Bolivar conducted a
survey with parents during the matriculas process. These
yearly audits, part of our client focus for ISO 9001, gives
parents the chance to share their opinions and suggestions
with the school. Originally intended for parents with
children in grades 1, 5, 8 and 11, 166 families ended up
taking the survey, representing almost all the grade levels
in the school. Below are the summary results from the
survey; percentages were combined for responses AGREE and
STRONGLY AGREE as were those for DISAGREE and STRONGLY
DISAGREE.
Colegio
Bolivar Mission & Educational Program
An
overwhelming majority of parents feel that the mission
accurately reflects the true
nature of
the school (92% A/SA), that the educational program is of
High Quality (88% A/SA), citing specific areas such as
technology (87% A/SA), library materials (94% A/SA),
classroom materials (95% A/SA), and physical education (85%
A/SA). The Atelier also received high marks (68% A /SA with
26% Does Not Apply).
School
Services
School
Services received high scores, as well: extracurricular
sports (77% A/SA), transportation (80% A/SA), security (93%
A/SA), doctor’s office (81% A/SA) and technology (88%
A/SA). Areas of concern included extracurricular activities
(66% A/SA) and the cafeteria (39% A/SA).
Follow up
questions regarding the extracurricular activities program
revealed that 41% of those responding note that their son or
daughter is already participating outside of school in a
program; 10% feel that the costs are too high; 14% that
activities run too late in the day; 15% that the school
needs more variety.
Teaching
and Learning
This area
of the survey received very high marks from the
respondents. High expectations for students (89%A/SA),
relationships between students and staff (89% A/SA),
relevant homework assignments (88% A/SA), the efficacy of
the counseling staff (73% A/SA with 16% neutral), counseling
orientation and workshops (64% A/SA with 23% neutral),
Student Services (55% A/SA with 19% neutral and 22% does not
apply), and a Positive Attitude towards learning (91% A/SA)
were some of the highlights from this section of the survey.
Communications & Activities
Opinions
regarding communications were also very
high:
active promotion of communication (84% A/SA), helpful and
relevant information (96% A/SA), making appointments with
administration (86% A/SA), providing opportunities for
parent involvement (88% A/SA), and Asopadres (74% A/SA).
Finally, the vast majority of parents requested that
publications continue to be available in Spanish and English
(96%) even though 90% responded that they can understand
written English either well or very well.
Installations & Organization
As with the
other surveys, the installations at Colegio Bolivar continue
to receive highly favorable comments and scores. The campus
(99% A/SA), classrooms (94% A/SA), library (96% A/SA),
science labs (77% A/SA with 11 neutral and 10% not
applicable), and sports facilities (94% A/SA) received the
highest scores. The auditorium (50% A/SA with 24% neutral)
continues to receive lower scores.
Overall,
the survey results were very positive; Colegio Bolivar is
clearly fulfilling and exceeding the expectations of its
parents and students. Some of the areas which require
further scrutiny and monitoring are the cafeteria, the
auditorium, issues of student respect, cheating, and the
school website. All of these subjects are receiving
attention through our ISO 9001 procedures, and committees
have been formed to further study, monitor and help improve
these areas, many of which are as much budget or
communication issues as serious concerns. As progress is
made, more information will be disseminated.
