Storytellers at Colegio Bolivar
With the sponsorship of Asopadres and the Colegio Bolivar
academic sections, we
 were pleased to be able to offer the brilliant storytelling of Diane Ferlatte to students from 4th, 5th, 8th
and 11th grades on November 7 and Jaime
Riascos, who presented to K5, 1st, 2nd
and 3rd graders the play “La Chica Mágica,”
on October 30th.
Since 1999, Dream on Productions from Argentina has promoted
high quality cultural events to schools throughout Latin
America, and Colegio Bolivar has been taking advantage
of these presentations since 2006. Diane Ferlatte was
born in Louisiana,
 where she told stories on the front porch of her house and
sang in the church choir. She
started her storytelling career reading to her adopted son
who had been raised on a
steady diet of television for much of his life. Slowly but
surely, her love for reading
became her vocation, and now she has told stories all over
the world from Graz, Austria, to Auckland, New Zealand.
As well, she has visited almost every state in the U.S.,
including Hawaii and Alaska, to perform at major
festivals, theaters, conferences, universities, schools,
libraries, senior centers, detention facilities,
churches, and many other venues. Diane has won over 30
awards
for her storytelling, including a Grammy nomination for
“Wickety Whack-Brer Rabbit is
Back.”
Diane’s
performance at Colegio Bolivar was warmly received, and the
feedback from
staff and students alike was overwhelmingly positive. From
the 4th graders to the 11th graders,
she held them under her spell, reciting stories from
African-American
 heritage
and teaching them all a little bit about the forgotten art
of telling stories. Her
animated style, exceptional skill with voices, and the sole
prop of a rhythm stick, also fascinated the students. The
morals to her stories were relevant and practical for
children of all ages, and her enunciation and age-level
appropriate dialogue made her work wholly accessible.
Many
thanks to Asopadres and Colegio Bolivar for bringing Diane
Ferlatte and Jaime Riascos to our school. We certainly hope
to have more events like this in the future.

Cuenteros en el Colegio Bolívar
Con
el auspicio de Asopadres y de las secciones académicas
del Colegio Bolívar, estamos complacidos por haber
podido ofrecer las brillantes presentaciones de la
cuentera Diane Ferlatte a los estudiantes de los grados
4º, 5º, 8º y 11º el pasado 7 de noviembre y el 30 de
octubre la de Jaime Riascos a los niños de K5, 1º, 2º y
3º, éste último con la obra “La Chica Mágica”.
Desde 1999, “Dream On Productions” de Argentina ha
promovido eventos con una alta calidad cultural para los
colegios en toda América Latina y el Colegio Bolívar se
ha beneficiado de estas presentaciones desde el 2006.
Diane Ferlatte nació en
Louisiana, donde contaba historias en el portón de su
casa y
cantaba en el coro de la
iglesia.
Ella inició su carrera de cuentera leyéndole a su hijo
adoptivo, quien se crió con una dieta estricta de
televisión la mayor parte de su vida. Lento pero
seguro, su amor por la lectura se convirtió en vocación
y ahora ella ha contado historias en todo el mundo desde
Graz, Austria hasta Auckland, Nueva Zelanda. Así mismo,
ha visitado casi cada estado de USA, incluyendo Hawai y
Alaska, para presentarse en los mejores festivales,
teatros, conferencias, universidades, colegios,
bibliotecas, centros de “Seniors”, penitenciarias,
iglesias y muchas otros sitios. Diane ha ganado más de
30 premios contando cuentos, incluyendo una nominación
al Grammy por “Wickety Whack-Brer Rabbit is Back.
Las presentaciones de Diane en el Colegio Bolívar fueron
recibidas con calidez y la retroalimentación del cuerpo
docente y estudiantes, fueron tremendamente positivos.
Desde los alumnos de 4º grado hasta los de 11º, los mantuvo
encantados,
recitando historias sobre las costumbres Afro-Americanas
y enseñándoles a todos un poco sobre el arte olvidado de
contar historias. Su animado estilo, excepcional habilidad
con la voz y singular manejo del ritmo pegajoso, también les
fascinó a los estudiantes. Las moralejas de sus historias
eran relevantes y prácticas para los niños de todas las
edades, además su discurso adecuadamente explicativo y para
todo público, hizo que fuera totalmente comprendido.
Muchísimas gracias a Asopadres y al Colegio Bolívar por
traer a Diane Ferlatte a Cali y a Jaime Riascos. Esperamos
contar con más eventos como este en el futuro.
