Counseling

The High School section of Colegio Bolivar offers a university preparatory program in which the focus of the structure and the instruction is to ensure the high quality of student learning and the development of ethical behavior.

The day is divided into 4 periods of 80 minutes each. Classes meet every other day and a student attends 8 separate courses during a year - four on day A and another four on day B.

In the 9th and 10th grade programs each student must take a core offering of English, Math, Spanish, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, Computers and Art or music.

In 11th and 12th grades the students take a core offering of English, Spanish, Science and Math and may choose their other four courses amongst an offering of approximately 20 electives each year. One of the choices must be in Social Studies but the offerings range across all academic areas, some including AP courses.

All High School students complete two major social service projects, one in 10th grade and one in 11th grade. In 10th grade the students participate in a week long biological field experience in one of several sites off the Colombian Pacific coast. All 11th graders participate in a week long career experience. The school also participates actively in the Model United Nations project. Seniors finalize the year with exhibitions of long term interdisciplinary projects.

Services to students include a full time counselor, a full time university counselor, an Advanced Placement Program Coordinator, and a doctor. Students may take SAT and ACT exams on campus for U.S. University entrance.

Evaluation on students’ work is reported by objective. Students must pass all major objectives of a course to receive credit for the course. Objective achievement is rated as ranging from "not met" to "met with excellence".

Student activities include the Student Council, various sports competitive teams, Honor Society, choir, instrumental music groups and task forces for assessment and values.

Graduates of Colegio Bolivar receive both the Colombian secondary diploma and the U.S. High School diploma.
