Library Events and Displays – 2007-2008

o    Primary:

o    Getting to know you, Back to School Theme, Teacher’s in class project idea: Make Bookmarks, Students should start learning their Patron #’s. 

September

o    Banned Books Week – September 29-October 6, 2007

o    Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the freedom to read, is observed the last week of September. Each year, librarians, booksellers, teachers and countless others take this opportunity to highlight the importance of intellectual freedom and remind us not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.

o    Open House

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Friendship month, Inclusion Activities, Creating a safe environment to learn theme, Letter writing (mailbox Idea) No word books display.

October

o    Teen Read Week - October 14-20, 2007

o    A national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association that is aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults. The continuing message of the Teen Read Week initiative is to encourage 12-18 year olds to "Read For The Fun Of It". Each year an annual theme allows YALSA to focus on timely topics and teen interests. Teen Read Week is celebrated the third full week in October every year.

o    National Children's Book Week – November 12-18, 2007

o    A celebration of the written word, Children's Book Week introduces young people to new authors and ideas in schools, libraries, homes and bookstores. Through Children's Book Week, the Children's Book Council encourages young people and their caregivers to discover the complexity of the world beyond their own experience through books.

o    Orientation for New Staff

o    Orientation for MS – Grades 6 and 7

o    Halloween Displays

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Halloween, Scary Books theme, and display. Witches and Fairies Theme and also 60th year School Celebration.

November

o    National Family Literacy Day – November 1

o    National Family Literacy Day is officially celebrated on November 1st, but many events are held throughout the month of November. It’s never been more important to spread the word in your community and build awareness for the importance of families working together toward a better educated tomorrow.

o    New Book Orders with Teachers

o    Thanksgiving Displays

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Thanksgiving Theme and Adventure Narratives. 

December

o    Christmas Themes

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Christmas Theme and Braille Books display, also the Instituto de Ciegos y Sordos Visit.

 

January

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Resolutions Theme, Start the time Capsules with 5th graders.

February

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: St. Valentine’s Day Theme, Bulletin of books teacher’s love, and students love to read

March

o    Teen Tech Week - March 2-8, 2008

o    Teen Tech Week is a national initiative aimed at teens, their parents, educators, and other concerned adults. The purpose of the initiative is to encourage teens to use libraries nonprint resources for education and recreation, and to help teens recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals in the field of information technology. The event is held annually during the second week of March.

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: St. Patrick’s Day Theme. Have guest (students) readers at Bolivar’s Day Celebration.

April                     

o    School Library Media Month - April

o    First celebrated in 1985, many school library media programs celebrate the month of April as School Library Media Month in conjunction with, and sharing the same theme as, National Library Week.

o    National Library Week - April 13-19, 2008

o    First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate.

o    In 2008, National Library Week 2008 (April 13-19) will be celebrated with the theme, "Join the circle of knowledge @ your library®." 

o    National Library Workers Day - April 15, 2007

o    The Allied Professional Association of the American Library Association (ALA-APA) annually sponsors National Library Workers Day, which falls on the Tuesday of National Library Week. The purpose is to recognize all library workers, including librarians, support staff and others who make library service possible every day.

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Dia del Idioma Bulletin Board, April Fools Day, Communications Theme. Easter/Semana Santa.

May

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Biographies / Teacher’s Day. Teacher’s in class idea: READATHON.

June

o    Secondary:

o    Primary: Summer Reading List, Closure of the Time capsules collected from 5th graders

Recopila, organiza y cataloga todo el material didáctico, que viene en diferentes formatos, que constantemente se están adquiriendo.

Ayuda a formar estudiantes autónomos y responsables, permitiendo el acceso directo por parte de éstos a los materiales, ya que cuenta con una “colección abierta”. Esto hace que los estudiantes se involucren directamente con su aprendizaje y que conozcan de primera mano la bibliografía con la que cuenta la biblioteca.

Divulga e informa de manera continua las últimas adquisiciones, todos los acontecimientos culturales que ocurren dentro de la institución y fuera de ella.

Forma a los estudiantes y profesores en el uso adecuado de los recursos de información.

Asesora a la comunidad educativa en sus investigaciones y búsquedas bibliográficas.

Fomenta la lectura a través de diferentes actividades de promoción lectora, diseñadas de acuerdo con las edades de sus usuarios y recomienda lecturas apropiadas para los diferentes niveles de habilidad.

Estimula la expresión cultural y la exposición a diferentes manifestaciones artísticas. Esta biblioteca cuenta con una sala de exposiciones y un auditorio que son usados para exposiciones y conferencias de escritores, ilustradores y conferencistas que son invitados.

Actúa como enlace con otras fuentes y servicios externos y fomenta su uso por parte de alumnos y profesores.

Cumple con una función educativa, pues está divulgando a los profesores y empleados las oportunidades de desarrollo profesional que se encuentran disponibles en las universidades y centros en el ámbito nacional.

Fomenta la lectura de todo tipo de material y sus diferentes soportes como medio de entretenimiento y aprovechamiento del tiempo libre.

Capacita a los estudiantes de último año para que organicen una biblioteca en una de las escuelitas donde prestan su servicio de alfabetización, desempeñando así una acción social.

Es soporte fundamental para el currículo del colegio pues cuenta con una gran cantidad y variedad de recursos educativos.

La biblioteca del Colegio Bolívar es un espacio educativo y un centro de recursos multimedia al servicio de la comunidad educativa.
