SIMPLE MACHINES

GRAND FINALE PROJECT

Objectives

Students will have the opportunity to:

  1. Apply the knowledge and skills learned in the simple machines unit to design a mechanical system.
  2. Apply the knowledge and skills learned in the simple machines unit to build a mechanical system.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of simple machines by naming and explaining each simple machine that appears in their mechanical system.
  4. Improve group working skills. Students should demonstrate the ability to form a group of three responsible members giving reasons for their choices. Each group member will demonstrate a responsibility to the group and its project, as well as the ability to communicate ideas and concepts, use time wisely and complete a better machine than would have been possible for one person working triple the time. (Three heads should be better than one!)

Mission:

bulletChoose and have approved a group of three people to work together. You will need to give reasons for your choices. Due date: A day - Thurs. Nov. 15 and B day – Fri. Nov. 16.
bulletDesign a mechanical system with as many simple machines as possible, include a brief description of each simple machine in your mechanical system. Your machine cannot be larger than 1 m 3.This written part should be done on computer as you will be handing this back in on the final day of working on the machine with any changes to the original design accounted for. Due date: Mon. Dec 3 (This is a B day but both groups are due, this allows both groups to have a long weekend.) At this time you will also complete an evaluation of your groups effort up to this point.
bulletBuild a system of simple machines that will complete a simple task. You will have five class periods to complete your machine starting Thurs. Dec. 6 for A day and Fri. Dec. 7 for B day. After the third class day of working on your machines you will also complete an evaluation of your groups effort up to this point. During the final class you will hand in an updated version of your design and complete a final group work evaluation sheet. If all goes as planned the final days will be A day: Thurs. Jan 10 and B day Fri. Jan. 11. Evaluation of final work will take place Mon. Jan 14 and Tues. Jan 15 hopefully in the library. Possible ideas for a simple task are:

bullet

put toothpaste on a tooth brush

bullet

put one cup of cereal (or something else) into a bowl

bullet

bullet

wake you up

bullet

pick up or deliver something

bullet
