Quaker Reference Colgate Conference Primary
Audiovisual Propal Lending Policies Copies Finally...

The library is open from 6:45 to 4:15 each school day. There are eight basic areas to the library:

1. Secondary Library (Quaker)

· Here is where you will find all the fiction and non-fiction books in the CB Secondary collection. This room is for QUIET work and may be reserved by one class at a time at the Front Desk.
1. Fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's last name. Books in Spanish are labeled with a small piece of yellow tape. As well, these books are divided into junior high (JF) and high school (HF) fiction. (But look in both areas to be sure!)
2. Non-Fiction books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal system. (Within the call number, books are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name.)
3. As well, the professional collection is located against the east wall of the library beneath the Primary library.
4. Finally, there are a number of paperbacks and other books in the short book displays that may be borrowed or exchanged.
· All the books in this area, with the exception of the exchange books, are available in the OPAC online catalog.
1. With the OPAC, you can search for books, videos, equipment, magazines, and audio recordings by Title, Author, Subject, Keyword, Series or Call Number. In addition, the OPAC has a special interface for our younger clients.
· Other sources in the Quaker:
1. Videocassettes (VHS or BETA) are available for browsing behind the front desk.
2. Magazines and newspapers are available behind the front desk. We keep one year's worth of US magazines and newspapers all copies of local magazines.

2. Reference Room

· Here is where you will find our collection of reference materials. These include encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and general reference works in both Spanish and English. Either Clara or Tom can help you find the sources you need. This room must be reserved directly with Tom and may be used by only one class at a time. The computers in the Colgate are also reserved along with the Reference Room. The room may not be reserved after 1:45 although it will remain open until 4:00. As well, we encourage teachers to talk with us AS they are planning their project or library work. We have found that being part of the original team and planning has a great impact on what the students take away from their work in the library.
· Teachers may request the creation of reserve materials at the reference desk. We encourage teachers to be part of the selection process.
· In addition to our reference works, the computer terminals in both the Reference Room and the Colgate offer access to online databases for reference, magazine articles and book purchases. These are listed below:
1. OPAC - The online library catalog, which lists all our resources, including books, magazines, equipment, videocassettes, and reference books.
2. SIRS Researcher and Discoverer - A full text database of magazine articles arranged by topic. The Researcher edition is for students from 7 through 12 and the Discoverer edition is for the younger kids.
3. World Book Encyclopedia 2000- The best resource for younger students, the World Book included not only a wide number of articles but also an atlas, quotations, a dictionary, a timeline and other interesting features.
4. Encyclopedia Britannica 2000 - THE authority in encyclopedias, this digital edition includes the full text of all the articles in the print edition plus internet links, a timeline, an atlas and a dictionary.
5. EBSCO - An indexing and full test database for magazines. We have not renewed this service.
6. Salvat Multimedia and Historia del Arte - An encyclopedia of art and general topics in Spanish.
7. Asi es Colombia - A general information database for information on Colombia.
8. Domine - Another general purpose resource in Spanish.
9. Internet!

3. The Colgate Reading Room

· This area is divided into areas for groups of students or classes to meet and may be reserved by two or more classes at a time at the Front Desk. We currently have nine networked computers in this area with more to follow. They have the same databases available as those in the Reference Room.
· In addition, this area is for displays of student work and may be reserved as such for a period of two weeks. Depending on the types of the displays, more than one or two may be possible in the space.

4. The Conference Rooms (L-04, L-05, L-06)

· These areas may be reserved by teachers and staff for meetings with parents, tutorials, etc. No standing reservations will be allowed. Students may use the small conference rooms, as well.

5. The Primary Library

· The primary library maintains its own stacks, videos and other resources. The OPAC, however, serves the whole library. There are several sections to this area.
1. Fiction books (chapter books) for upper level primary are arranged alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's last name.
2. Non-fiction books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal system and alphabetically according to the first three letters of the author's last name within headings.
3. Non-Fiction books in Spanish have their own area and are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal system and alphabetically according to the first three letters of the author's last name within headings.
4. Serial novels are organized separately.
5. Books for the lower levels of primary and for preprimary are arranged by reading level (easy, medium and advanced) and topic. The color codes for the topics are posted.
6. Reference books are available against the wall along with two resource computers (more to follow), containing the same sources as the high school library, and one OPAC computer.
7. Magazines and other serials are found in the entry.
· Primary students may use any of the facilities in the secondary library either individually or in class groups.

6. The Audiovisual Rooms

· The audiovisual rooms (L-26 and L-27) are available for teachers and staff to reserve. L-26 is primarily for Primary and Preprimary use while L-27 is for secondary. Please inform the front desk what materials you will need when reserving the room. Although L-26 is primarily for primary/preprimary and L-27 for secondary, any class may use either room.

7. The Propal Auditorium

· Teachers and staff may reserve this larger audiovisual room at any time; however, we suggest that it only be used for multiple classes or if L-26 and L-27 are not available. Please inform the front desk what materials you will need when reserving the room.

Lending Policies:

· The fine for late materials is $100 pesos a day up to a maximum of $3,000 pesos. In addition, once anything is overdue, the student will lose library check out privileges until the late item is returned or paid for. If an item is never returned, the student will be charged for the replacement cost of the item plus the fine. The replacement cost is the current Baker and Taylor price of the book (in US$) multiplied by the ISS exchange rate (which includes shipping and handling). Teachers are responsible for books, as well. If a book used for classroom work was lost, the price of the book will be billed back to the section. Lost books which were for personal use will be charged as explained above.
· AV equipment is only checked out to teachers.

Copies:

· Photocopies are available for $50 pesos per copy for students. Teachers and staff may photocopy using their own budget.
· The networked printer is also located at the front desk. If you need something printed, print it but have the print job approved with Xandra first.
· The librarian may also copy Videocassettes. Please bring a blank tape.
· Please remember that ALL photocopies and copies of videocassettes are for educational purposes only.

Finally,

· If you have suggestions for events, activities, materials selection or other improvements or concerns, please feel free to share these with the librarian.
· I would like at least a copy of all lesson plans that require work in the library IN ADVANCE of your visit or the student's work. This will help us to better help you and your students. In most cases, however, I would like to meet with you BEFORE you come in.
· Workshops and short mini-lessons on researching information, validating resources, study skills, Internet searches, etc will be available throughout the year. Just let us know who, when and where.
· Students are expected to document all their sources of information. The library has copies of the English Department Style Booklet (APA) and the Iconotec/ICFES Style Book (Colombian).
· Activities for MS and HS students to reinforce library skills are available to teachers.
· Anything we can do to help you in your preparations for class will be done.
