Web Searching

Please use the proper format for your bibliographies and citations.  Check the BibHelpers in the Reference Room or the English Department Style Guide (pdf format) here.

The earth is not a mere fragment of dead history, stratum upon stratum like the leaves of a book, to be studied by geologists and antiquaries chiefly, but living poetry like the leaves of a tree, which precede flowers and fruit—not a fossil earth, but a living earth; compared with whose great central life all animal and vegetable life is merely parasitic. Its throes will heave our exuviæ from their graves.

Henry David Thoreau (1817–62), U.S. philosopher, author, naturalist. Walden,"Spring" (1854).

We have books on your topics in the library, both in the stacks and in the reference room; do a keyword and subject search for your topic, and put it in quotation marks (e.g. "plate tectonics"); you should also look for general books on geography and earth science.  We have some on reserve for you.  As well, you should look at our online resources, including SIRS Researcher, Britannica 2000, and Worldbook 2000.

Many of your specific topics are not listed, yet you will find plenty of information on the other pages about all your topics.  Remember that you need to use at least 5 sources of three different types (remember to write a bibliography!) from books, magazines, the Internet, videos, encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers, and any others.

Also, you may want to take advantage of our trial subscription to EBSCO online.  However, you will have to do some digging here to find the kind of information you need.  Try the web pages first.

Finally, if you do your own search, you should use Yahoo! first (check their catagory for Geology and Geophysics), as it lists topics much more completely and accurately than if you use an open search engine like Google.

As always, if you need any help, please see me.  The list below is just to get you started; it is not complete.

SEARCH the National Geographic Magazines from the National Geographic Site
Here you can search all the National Geographic magazines.  Just write in your country and you will get a list of all the magazine articles that use the word.  Check the title of the article and MAKE SURE that the Publisher is
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine.  Then, look at the date of the magazine; we have quite a few for the last 30 years.
