International telephone service to and from Colombia is fast, easy, and of high quality. Most telephones now have direct dialing (90 – country code {U.S. and Canada = 1} + area code + telephone number); however, some still do not offer this service. With the greater availability of high-speed internet connections here, you may also consider using a VOIP (voice over IP) phone, such as WhatsApp, Viber, or Skype and using your cable or Ethernet connection at home to make international calls. Skype, or similar services, of course, will also work quite well from your computer.<\/p>\n

A WORD TO THE WISE<\/strong><\/p>\n
PLEASE KEEP ALL RECEIPTS FOR BILLS PAID. THIS INCLUDES TELEPHONE, POWER, PERSONAL, CREDIT CARD, ETC. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL NEED THEM!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Rates from Colombia vary widely depending upon the service you use and the different promotions that come and go for these services. Colombia now has a variety of long-distance carriers from which you can choose. If you have direct dial, you can use different prefixes (by dialing 009, you use Emcali, the local telephone company; 007 is EPB Bogota; 005 is Claro – all followed by the area code and number which you are dialing) to access these services. Rates are competitive, and there are often specials on the weekends, so look for these in the newspapers. (The bill for these carriers will appear on your regular monthly phone bill.) As well, you can sign up for cheaper plans (savings of about 60% with either Claro or Emcali) or buy the service as part of a package deal with internet and television.<\/p>\n
Cell Phones<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
The school will facilitate the purchase of a cell phone plan for you as soon as possible after your arrival. The plan will be under the school\u2019s name therefore, the monthly cost of the plan will be deducted from your paycheck (aprox. USD $17- COP 70.000) This plan will include 800 min calls to USA\/PUERTO RICO\/CANADA and a 50Gb data plan. Please send an email to Angela Botero, (abotero@colegiobolivar.edu.co<\/a>) letting her know what type of cellphone equipment you will bring (iPhone, Samsung, etc) Make sure to bring an unlocked cellphone.<\/p>\n
You will have to keep this initial cellphone plan at least for <\/u>4<\/u> months before changing it. Since you won\u00b4t have a credit history in Colombia, the only way to purchase a new cellphone plan is once you build a credit record<\/u>.<\/p>\n
