Supermarkets in Colombia are based on North American models. There are several large modern supermarkets conveniently located, as well as many produce markets where you can find an excellent variety of fresh fruit and vegetables at very low prices. You will be able to find much of what you are accustomed to in these markets, as well as good quality meats. In fact, many of the larger supermarkets have a section devoted to imported foodstuffs. These can be, however, quite expensive, but it’s still convenient to have around. Finally, Price Smart (Costco) opened a little over two years ago and offers a reasonable representation of what it does in the States, but certainly not everything. It’s expensive, as well. Finally, you do have to pay a membership fee.<\/p>\n

For the Vegetarians<\/strong><\/p>\n

The following is from one of our first-year import teachers:<\/p>\n

“I came to Cali a pretty hard core vegetarian, and now I find myself, on occasion, eating poultry. Why the change of heart? My heart has not changed, but I changed my diet slightly out of necessity. I think Cali has some delicious food, but the city loves its poultry and red meat. The cafeteria at school makes some delicious juices, muffins, and eggs and arepas (on Friday mornings) but I usually pass on their lunches because they are not normally vegetarian-friendly. Just be prepared to buy and prepare your own lunches if you are a die-hard vegetarian.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
