Upon arrival, you will be housed temporarily at NH CALI ROYAL HOTEL (https:\/\/nhroyalcalihotel.com-cali.com\/), a 4-star hotel about 8 minutes from the school in a very nice residential\/commercial neighborhood. It\u2019s very close to Unicentro and Jardin Plaza, two of Cali\u2019s largest malls.<\/p>\n
We will spend the first two or three days after your arrival looking for apartments and houses. We will have scouted out several possibilities before you arrive.<\/p>\n
Housing is generally less expensive than in the States or Canada. Current imports are paying anywhere from US$450 to US$750 a month and up (lower end living together and higher end living alone). Studio apartments are also available at economical rates (about US$350 more or less) and often all services and internet are included in the studio apartments.<\/p>\n
Your lease will be in your name with the school as co-signer. It is illegal to deduct rent from your check; therefore, you will be required to pay your rent personally, monthly, ON TIME, to your property owner or the rental agency. Finally, you will be responsible for paying maintenance and utility bills.<\/p>\n
Many rental agencies may ask for a “stationary” fee of $150,000, more or less, (US$30 to US$40) for processing the contract or some percentage of the first month’s rent (10%). Less common is the typical first and last month plus security deposit as in the States, but you will need to pay your first month’s rent before you move in.<\/p>\n
Remember to pay all your utilities on time<\/strong>. These must be paid on or before the date they are due, and all payments can be made in your bank with your debit card, online, or by cash or check. Late payments are not accepted or are very difficult to make as they must be made at the EMCALI office (the Colombian utility company). In addition, because the utilities are still in the name of the owner of the house or apartment, often these bills are required to be paid in order to pay the rent. If you get behind more than two payments on either the telephone or electric bill, your utilities will be disconnected, and they can be difficult to get back on again. Payments for rent vary according to your landlord or rental agency; you will need to ask how these should be made before moving in. Finally, if you will be traveling and will miss a utility billing period, you should arrange to have the bill paid, through either a house cleaner or through the school; the same holds true for your rent; it’s better to pay this ahead of time rather than late. Many of your bills can now be paid through automatic tellers and the Internet. As well, there is a debit machine in the cafeteria for paying bills.
