Tips
- Be sure the summary you submit for the program accurately reflects what you will be doing during the session so that attendees can make legitimate choices.
- Plan solid activities that will fill the entire time allocated.
- Within the body of the description, brief examples of content, activities and materials should be presented.
- “Cute” titles are great, but they shouldn’t be so cute that they obscure the purpose of the session.
- Make a serious effort to engage participants in meaningful activities.
- Have a good balance of the presentation of knowledge through visuals, lecture, handouts and the discovery of knowledge through activities.
- Refrain from “selling” your approach. Your workshop should have the tone of explaining and teaching an approach or technique, not trying to convince participants that it is the best teaching opportunity since Socrates.
- Leave plenty of time for questions, but do not simply say “Any questions?” plan a brief activity that will allow the group to come up with thoughtful questions.
- Be sure you address difficulties and problems you encountered in using a specific approach. Your credibility will be increased by a frank explanation of problems and frustrations.
- RELAX! A great sense of humor and some humorous materials will allow the participants to identify with you.
- Get a feel for your audience before you get started and try to make it as relevant to the different participants as possible.
- Enjoy!
