Preprimary

Academic Focus

Colegio Bolivar has continued to intensify its focus on Deeper Learning and the 21st Century Skills and so has the Preprimary (PP) section.  Teachers implement the Play-based approach of the Ontario Kindergarten Program for K4 & K5, and the Lucy Calkins Readers’ and Writers’ Workshops and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) curriculum in 1st grade, all focused on developing age-appropriate cognitive, academic, motor, and socioemotional skills. Teachers have accepted the challenge of impacting learning through the virtual and hybrid models and have been able to engage students in meaningful learning experiences.

Programs such as Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), Handwriting without Tears and Fun with ABC focus on the prerequisites for oral development, as well as for reading and for writing; these include spatial and temporal construction, vocabulary, phonemic awareness and phonics, laterality and directionality, auditory and visual perception and discrimination, attention, and executive functions.  In line with deeper learning, cognitive engagement is expected both in teacher planning and curriculum implementation.

Teachers, to continue supporting student learning, engagement, and growth, participate in weekly professional learning communities (PLC and PPLP) that enrich them as professionals and allow them to develop their SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) goals within their grade levels and classrooms.

Student Groups Composition

The average number of students in the Preprimary section is 315.
