It functions similarly to a traditional compass, but instead of guiding people toward physical directions, it leads them through the fundamental pillars of sustainability, assigning a letter to each:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colegiobolivar.edu.co\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-18-at-10.38.49-AM-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23827\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>N stands for Nature:<\/strong> This includes all ecological systems and environmental concerns, from ecosystem health and biodiversity conservation to the sustainable use of resources and waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>E stands for Economy:<\/strong> This addresses human systems that transform natural resources into goods and services, including agriculture, technology, employment, and financial systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>S stands for Society:<\/strong> This encompasses institutions, organizations, and social norms that influence our collective lives, including education, culture, and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>W (for West) stands for Well-being:<\/strong> Focused on health, happiness, and quality of life, ensuring that sustainable development enhances both individual and collective well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifth-grade students used this <strong>Sustainability Compass<\/strong> to reflect on real environmental issues, assigning key words and phrases to each of the compass points (<strong>Nature, Economy, Society, and Well-being<\/strong>). For example, under the <strong>&#8220;Nature&#8221;<\/strong> category, they discussed the importance of water conservation and biodiversity, while in <strong>&#8220;Economy,&#8221;<\/strong> they explored the impact of industrial production and responsible consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After identifying key concepts, the next step was to find connections within and across categories. For instance, they linked <strong>human well-being<\/strong> to access to <strong>clean air (Nature)<\/strong> and connected <strong>economic systems<\/strong> with <strong>social justice (Society).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"23825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colegiobolivar.edu.co\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-18-at-10.38.50-AM.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23825\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"23826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colegiobolivar.edu.co\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-18-at-10.38.50-AM-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23826\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By visualizing these connections, students were able to identify <strong>areas of &#8220;power&#8221; or influence<\/strong> where they could generate the greatest positive impact. These areas allowed them to focus their efforts on specific aspects that could lead to <strong>tangible changes<\/strong>, whether at a local or global level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The activity not only helped students understand environmental challenges from multiple perspectives but also taught them to think <strong>holistically and systemically<\/strong>. They realized that <strong>environmental issues cannot be addressed in isolation<\/strong> but are deeply interconnected with <strong>economic, social, and human well-being factors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"23816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colegiobolivar.edu.co\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-18-at-10.28.03-AM-6-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23816\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"23817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colegiobolivar.edu.co\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-18-at-10.28.03-AM-8-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23817\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With projects like this in the classroom, <strong>Colegio Bol\u00c3\u00advar<\/strong> strengthens its commitment to <strong>environmental education<\/strong> and the development of <strong>responsible citizens<\/strong>, empowered to make <strong>conscious decisions<\/strong> and actively participate in addressing the global challenges we face today, such as <strong>climate change<\/strong>.
