The latest Bolivar Garden was a huge success with over 22 students from middle school social service coming along with their teacher and the middle school principal, Mr Rob Millet. Some volunteers came as well as some High School students in detention. In the three hours we worked we did a lot.
We pruned a good number of coffee trees so that they will be able to regrow. This entailed, cutting them back to about 35-50 cm, and collecting any ripe coffee beans from them.
We also pruned coffee trees that had been previously pruned to leave only the best or two best branches growing from the trees. Normally, when a coffee tree is pruned it produces four new branches. Once these have been established, the strongest of the branches are left whilst the weaker branches are removed. This ensures that the coffee tree puts its effort into the strongest and most productive part of the tree.
In addition the banana trees in the cacao plot were cleaned of their dead leaves, making the plot look tidy and well organized.
We removed the wood that had crashed into the terrace.
An amazing group of 7th grade girls did a fantastic job at weeding the greenhouse, in preparation for the planting of tomato plants.
We also pruned back one mata raton tree (Gliricidia sepium), a nitrogen fixing tree, the leaves of which were spread on the beds of the recently weeded greenhouse, to provide a good green organic manure material to the beds.
Finally, some brave students tackled the shed and cleaned it out – THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Social service provided a nice snack of fruit, fruit juice and dedos de queso for all that participated. We hope that middle school social service will be back to the garden again in the future!
Fin de semana de Bolívar: poda de cafetos, riego de cacao, limpieza de plátanos, poda de Mata Ratón y fertilización verde.
El último Jardín Bolívar fue un gran éxito, con la asistencia de más de 22 estudiantes de servicio social de la escuela secundaria, acompañados por su profesor y el director, el Sr. Rob Millet. También vinieron algunos voluntarios y estudiantes de preparatoria que estaban castigados. En las tres horas que trabajamos, hicimos mucho.
Podamos varios cafetos para que pudieran rebrotar. Esto implicó cortarlos a unos 35-50 cm y recolectar los granos de café maduros. También podamos cafetos que ya habían sido podados, dejando solo las mejores ramas. Normalmente, cuando se poda un cafeto, produce cuatro ramas nuevas. Una vez establecidas, se dejan las ramas más fuertes y se eliminan las más débiles. Esto asegura que el cafeto concentre su energía en la parte más fuerte y productiva del árbol.
Además, limpiamos las hojas secas de los bananos en la parcela de cacao, dejando la parcela con un aspecto limpio y ordenado.
Un grupo increíble de chicas de séptimo grado hizo un trabajo fantástico desyerbando el invernadero, preparándolo para la siembra de tomateras.
También podamos un árbol de mata raton (Gliricidia sepium), un árbol fijador de nitrógeno, cuyas hojas se esparcieron sobre los bancales del invernadero recién desyerbado, para proporcionar un buen abono orgánico verde.
Finalmente, algunos estudiantes valientes se encargaron del cobertizo y lo limpiaron. ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!
El servicio social ofreció una rica merienda de fruta, jugo de fruta y dedos de queso para todos los participantes. ¡Esperamos que el servicio social de la escuela secundaria vuelva al huerto en el futuro!
