In planning for the upcoming Bolivar Garden I went to the garden to see the progress of the remaining beans only to find that a massive trunk of a Chiminango tree had broken and smashed into the terrace, destroying the roofing, plastic posts and fencing, plus beans and plants. The destruction was huge, not only was the roof and supports flattened, but branches of the trees swamped beans that had been growing.

 

 

All hands were on deck to help clean up the destruction. My students and I worked with hand saws and machetes to cut down the most obvious branches and remove sticks and leaf material from the terrace.

Then Segundo and Eduardo, two of the schools ´gardeners came with a chain saw to cut the massive trunks of wood.

During the next class and the Bolivar Garden we moved this wood away from the garden and cleaned up the area.

Now we have to think how to fix the terrace temporarily so that we can plant pumpkins without them getting eaten, and how to danger proof the terrace for the future.

Otro desastre en la terraza.

Mientras planificaba el próximo Jardín Bolívar, fui a ver cómo iban las plantas de frijol que quedaban, solo para encontrarme con que un enorme tronco de un árbol de chiminango se había roto y destrozado la terraza, destruyendo el techo, los postes de plástico y la cerca, además de las plantas de frijol. La destrucción fue enorme: no solo el techo y los soportes quedaron aplastados, sino que las ramas del árbol cubrieron las plantas de frijol que estaban creciendo.

Todos nos pusimos manos a la obra para limpiar los destrozos. Mis alumnos y yo trabajamos con sierras de mano y machetes para cortar las ramas más visibles y retirar palos y hojas de la terraza. Luego, Segundo y Eduardo, dos de los jardineros de la escuela, llegaron con una motosierra para cortar los enormes troncos.

Durante la siguiente clase y en el Jardín Bolívar, retiramos la madera del jardín y limpiamos la zona.

Ahora tenemos que pensar cómo reparar la terraza temporalmente para poder plantar calabazas sin que se las coman, y cómo protegerla para el futuro.
