In 2020, two students, Sara Escobar and Melissa Londoño, were tasked with coming up with an idea for the 8th grade Sustainability Shark Tank competition.  They approached me and asked me what sort of ideas might work. They wanted to work on something to do with the garden and suggested vertical gardens and recycling. I talked to them for quite a while and suggested the idea of investigating the prospect of setting up a greenhouse in the school garden.

During the following months Sara and Melissa came to me and asked me specific questions, which I duly answered. They went off, prepared a presentation which they presented to the panel of judges, which included the Middle School Principle, the school´s curriculum director, the school´s engineer, and their respective teachers in science and social studies.

They won the competition and as such their project was highlighted to be funded. However, due to the pandemic the project was placed on the back burner.

Fast forward two years and these two students with another student, Gabriela Gomez, walked into their first chemistry class and asked if the greenhouse project was going to continue.

I said that absolutely it was going to continue and have firmly placed the ball in their court.

I will regularly add posts to show if these three students can indeed make their sustainability project a reality!
