During the Bolivar Garden Saturday, we were pleased to host Drs Vaast and Souniga, experts in coffee and cacao to the school garden to informally assess the work that we are doing and to give advice on what should be our next steps.

The plot as of April 2023 with plantains already planted at 9x9m spacing.

The location of the cacao plot were discussed, as was the spacing of trees and the need to grow a cover shade crop, bananas so that the cacao trees are not photosynthetically over stressed.

Luis Sinistierra, one of our hardest working volunteers, learnt about how to maintain and manage plantains from Dr Vaast and Souniga.

Existing cacao trees were pruned back: volunteers were taught how best to do this, and advice was given as to the best method to manage our existing plantains, using the Grandmother, mother and daughter analogy.

Also, a lot of coffee was collected on this day, and will be roasted and sold at the upcoming Farmer´s Market.
