This week our new terrace got a severe beating from a minor landslide which deposited a lot of rocks and soil debris onto the terrace. Not only was material pushed through the terrace, the result were at least five plastic posts that had been cemented in blocks completely fractured, the door to the terrace broken in two and a lot of the netting pulled down and out of the terrace.

Broken gate, fence, posts and netting. The detritus of the landslide can be seen in the foreground.

This level of destruction was unexpected – we were lucky that no-one was injured.

Some or our maize and bean plants were obviously damaged during this landslide.

We have already started to work to repair the damage. Students have removed rock debris and soil from the base of the terrace, and we have been promised a minga of work from the school gardeners to help with the reconstruction.

This was the soil and rock debris that fell down the slope and destroyed the fenced terrace.

This is a setback, but we shall overcome this and get our terrace back to how it should be!

Landslide!
