The compost area will be central to one of the major themes of the garden. That is, to recyle and re-use resources. The school produces a lot of organic waste, in terms of food waste and paper/carton waste that can be recycled for nutrients to help plants grow.
Four compost areas will be constructed. Andres Felipe, Christian and Juan Mario are working on these; so far they have determined the size of the areas, worked out the levels and pegged out the area so that it is linked to the top path. Initially these will be naturally covered by tree foliage. The four compost bins will be dug into the slope and covered with tiles or wood (whatever we can reuse from the school). Planning ahead these will have drainage points and barrels to collect residues which we can use as fertilizer and pesticides once we begin using worms as decomposing agents.
