As the garden is on a steep slope, between 22 and 35°, we have to utilize some basic ideas to protect the soil yet make use of the land.

We first measured the slope at different points to determine the need for terracing (see the featured image).

We built A-frames in class, calibrated them in the field and then set about defining the lay of the land (working out the slope) and pegging it out with stakes. These contour lines are the basis of our terraces and whilst not exactly straight (as land is not) are correct.

Forming terraces along these lines will prevent water accumulation and soil run off when terraces are constructed.
