Driver’s Licenses

If you have a U.S. or Canadian license, go to any AAA (American Automobile Association) office and ask for an “International Driver’s Permit.” This, accompanied by your U.S. or Canadian license, is valid in Colombia for one year. If you wish to reapply, you might want to bring down a form for another year – you may reapply by mail. The one-year “validity” of an international driver’s license in Colombia is rarely if ever enforced. The cost is US$20.00 (?), and two photos are required.

Driver’s licenses in Colombia are easily obtained, but you will need your “cedula” (local identification card) before you may apply; therefore, if you plan on buying a car upon arrival, you will need an International Driver’s Permit, as you will not receive your cedula immediately after arrival. The school will help you obtain a driver’s license. Talk to Ana Luisa Sanchez for more information.

If your driver’s license is close to expiration, you might want to renew it before you leave.
