Electrical Appliances
Electrical appliances are available in Cali. Prices can still be somewhat higher than you might find for equivalent items in North America (and, for national brands, of somewhat lower quality), but not so high as to be outrageous (as was the case ten years ago). You might even be surprised at the low price of some items with the introduction of Price Smart, Alkosto, and other big box stores in Cali. In general, however, there is a basic rule to follow: when in doubt, or if you really don’t need it, then don’t bring it.
Your settling-in allowance ($3,000,000 COP) is to be used for getting you settled in; in other words, for buying these kinds of things. Do keep in mind that aside from the basic furniture, which is provided by the school (bed, refrigerator, washing machine, dinner table, coffee table, sofa, 2 chairs, nightstands) you will be setting up from scratch, something many of us haven’t done since college.
Finally, whatever is bought (or brought) here usually can be resold at a good price before you leave.
