Vaccinations
There are a couple of websites below that you can visit to check which vaccinations are recommended for Colombia.
- The Center for Disease Control
- Immunizations Recommended for Travel Outside of Canada – Health Canada
It is important to check these sites before you think about vaccinations as their recommendations may change depending upon what outbreaks may be occurring at any one time. As well, it’s important to consider the kinds of activities you may be engaged in while you are here. There is an obvious difference in health risks between those who live in the city and those who may travel extensively to rural areas.
Finally, remember that these sites, especially the government sites, may have a tendency to recommend more vaccinations than are absolutely necessary, but you decide.
Our own doctor, Dr. Patricia Guzman, recommends the following for someone traveling to Cali:
- Hepatitis B: three doses – initial, one booster at one month, and the second booster at 6 months
- Hepatitis A: two doses – initial and 1 booster 6 months later
- Influenza: once a year
- Typhoid Fever: one dose every 3 years
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis for the adult: one dose
- Yellow Fever: one dose every ten years
Vaccinations are also available here at prices much more economical than you will find in either the United States or Canada. You DO NOT need Yellow Fever to get into the country.
The school DOES NOT reimburse for vaccinations.
